Sparkling Light
Further experimentation with another different light source, sparklers. I really like the effect. It was almost feathery and the negative version is very interesting. Here are some of the photos and videos - Let me know what you think:
RED!
I have a habit with working on a small scale, so this week I went crazy and worked BIG. Using the plastic sheet cellophane , I bought in a florists, I covered it in red tissue paper - an extension of work I'd done earlier only bigger. I like the final result and I think I will do more. I think the colour really adds to the aesthetic effect.
Somewhere over the rainbow...
On an unusually sunny day last week, I spotted some " rainbows" as I was walking down the glass surrounded staircase. If only it was sunny more pften to capture more of these ....
Spinning Tops
In order to get an another view of light, in a circular motion, while also incorporating 3D I pinned small battery powered LED lights to a spinning top. I really like the effect, the different colours, the depth and the layers. The movement is truly evident also.

LED Rope
Thursday, 17 November 2011
I tried out print during the week and really enjoyed it. I felt it was free, gestural and matched well with my project. I mixed a honey coloured paste, transparency, with the inks to create the layering effect, similar to my work with paper. Further experimentation with this medium is required I think!!
Sticky Light???
To expand into 3D I applied hot glue in a gestural fashion, mimicking the light movements,to plastic sheets used for laminating. Once the glue dried, I peeled it from the plastic and it left clear markings in the cloudy surface and I was left with hard glue that when manipulated resembled the "ball of light" from earlier pictures. I really enjoyed this process and felt it was successful. Let me know what you think:
Similarities?? |
1 layer, 2 layers, 3 layers, more!
Inspired by the photos I took, I ve been experimenting with tissue paper to try and create a similar effect of the different densities of the light. I think the layering of the tissue paper was successful. I tried it on black paper, white paper, acetate and using coloured tissue too. I thought it was interesting that on black paper the thinner the layer, the darker the stripe, while the opposite is true of the acetate. I would like to try bigger versions of these on different papers possibly.I also used the same strips of tissue to drape across the window frame to show an alternative background. Let me know what you think :

Windmill arms
To imitate the movement and speed of light I've been trying gestural work. On charcoal and pastel covered paper, I used a rubber to swipe away in one direction - similar to the photos of light. I found the charcoal gave a better result as it was clearer, giving greater contrast. I liked doing this work as I felt it was better to be working quicker because light is so fast itself - working at the speed of light is a little bit out of reach I think!!!
Paper airplanes ...
Well not quite paper airplanes but this experience reminded me of them. I wanted to try out paper scoring and folding to see if it would encapsulate a similar view of a light beam. Inspired by a paper artsit, Peter Dahmen, I found on Youtube, I tested it out. I dont feel my results were successful but further experimentation is needed. I enjoyed making them nonetheless!
I keep on moving with the lights on
Earlier in my project, I photographed the results of me moving small battery operated lights in a dark room. I was pleased with the results so I decided to attempt some more. This time I tried moving them quicker, using more lights and spinning them in different ways. I really like the results as I feel they show both movement and light - the two aspects of my project. I am also interested in experimenting with these again with different techniques and possibly in a video format - added to my to-do list!! Let me know what you think:
