This was my first attempt at an installation. I wanted the piece to be like the beam of light or spotlight was right in front of you. I used ribbon that was matte on one side and shiny on the other so light would catch it at different angles as you walked around it. The first time I made it I wasn't happy with the studio background as it didn't stand out.
On my next attempt i put it against a black background and i was much happier with the result:

Researching artists a few days later I found Yoko Ono had a similar work on a much larger scale using rope:
